Our courses

Sondervick College is a school for vmbo basis/kader, mavo, havo, vwo (atheneum and gymnasium) and international education.

vmbo basic/framework

The vmbo basis/kader course aims to connect to levels 1 to 4 of the mbo. Already in year 1 students start working on orientation on professions, study directions and possible choices. This happens during the hours of mentor guidance and the subject PPO (Practical Profile Orientation).

In grade 3, upper school, students choose from one of the profiles listed below:

- Building, living & interior design
- Production, installation & energy
- Care & Welfare

In the upper secondary level of vmbo, students work in practical squares. Students follow about half of the lessons in a square. The other half of the lessons they follow in classrooms.

There is plenty of room for students to orient themselves to further studies. We do this by organizing excursions, visits to organizations and companies. In grade 3, students run two weeks of work orientation and in grade 4 they have two weeks of subject orientation.

After upper secondary school, most students move on to secondary school. This can be level 2, 3 or 4, depending on their level and results.

mavo

The mavo course is aimed at transferring to the mbo or havo. Students can choose from a theoretical course (optimal progression to havo) or a mixed course (optimal progression to mbo level 4).

Within the mixed curriculum, students can choose from one of the profiles listed below:

- Building, living & interior design
- Production, installation & energy
- Care & Welfare

havo

In the HAVO program, you’ll develop skills and learn to take responsibility, preparing you for the future. The HAVO program is designed to prepare students for higher professional education. We provide specialized support based on the principles of the Havisten Competent platform (www.havistencompetent.nl). This support focuses primarily on further developing study skills and gaining insight into career prospects after completing higher professional education.

During the first school year havo/vwo, study skills, the regular school subjects, customized classes, the excellent program, research orientation and classical cultural education are offered. In the second year of the havo/vwo bridge class, you can choose the gymnasium track. There will be extra subjects in Greek and Latin. During the second year, together with your mentor, you will make the choice for havo, atheneum or gymnasium.

Upper secondary school is all about working independently to complete your exams and transfer to college. Teachers will therefore increasingly assume the role of study coach and supervisor of the learning process. From year 4 you will no longer follow all subjects but a package of subjects.

A package consists of:
A common part for all students.
A profile part with some profile-specific subjects and electives.
The free space with one or two electives.

There is a choice of the following profile sections with the possibility of combining several profiles:
- C&M:culture and society
- E&M:economics and society
- N&G:nature and health
- N&T:nature and technology
- Combination C&M with E&M or N&G with N&T is also possible.

For havo students, cooperation is an important skill; it is preparation for the workplace. Collaboration comes to the fore in various projects, assignments and the profile paper.

At Sondervick College, all fourth-year students have Havo in Practice. During these classes they get to work on real practical assignments.

After upper school, most students move on to college.

vwo (atheneum and gymnasium)

The vwo program is aimed at progression to university education. Students can opt for an atheneum or gymnasium program, with both variants also available for bilingual study.

During the first year of HAVO/VWO, students are offered standard school subjects, customized lessons, the Excellence Program, science orientation, and classical cultural education. In the second year of the HAVO/VWO transition class, you can choose the Gymnasium track. This track includes additional courses in Greek and Latin. During the second year, you will work with your mentor to choose between HAVO, Atheneum, or Gymnasium.

In upper school, students learn to work independently and use a variety of information sources in preparation for higher vocational or university studies. The teacher's role is therefore shifting more toward study coach and supervisor of the learning process.

Starting in grade 4, you no longer take all subjects but a package of subjects. A package consists of:
- A common part for all students.
- A profile part with some profile-specific subjects and electives.
- The free space with one or two electives.

There is a choice of the following profile sections with the possibility of combining several profiles:
- C&M: culture and society
- E&M: economy and society
- N&G: nature and health
- N&T: nature and technology
- Combination C&M with E&M or N&G with N&T is also possible.

Students learn to research, argue and debate, among other things. They also learn to cooperate with others. These are indispensable skills in college, as well as later in their careers.

sondervick international school

Our international school is for students aged 11 to 15, at least one of whose parents has an international background. The intention is to stay in the Netherlands temporarily. Students are prepared for an English-language diploma. After four years, they receive the MYP diploma, and after six years, they graduate with an IB-CP diploma or IB-DP diploma, which prepares students for higher vocational education and university-level education.

Dutch Language and Culture

We place a strong emphasis on the Dutch language and culture. For example, through the Dutch Language and Culture (DLC) course. This helps international students integrate. Students’ Dutch proficiency must meet at least level A1 according to CEFR criteria. Students’ English proficiency must meet at least level A2 according to CEFR criteria.
