Learning CPR

Did you know that between 7,000 and 8,000 people are resuscitated in the Netherlands every year? Acting quickly and correctly can save lives. That is why our students in grades 1 and 3 received CPR training during the activity week. Under the guidance of the Keep the Heartbeat Going foundation, they practiced with CPR mannequins and AEDs.
 
But it didn't stop with training for our students. We also invited staff, parents, and local residents to take part in a course. Education manager Danilo Verus: "As a school, we are at the heart of the community and we believe it is important that not only our students, but also our staff, parents, and neighbors know how to help in an emergency."

Those attending the evening course were also given a demonstration of the ambulance. We would like to thank the Keep the Heartbeat Going Foundation and the ambulance service for their contribution to these training sessions!

Boys discover healthcare and girls discover technology

Thursday, April 10, was Girls' Day and Boys' Day for the students in grade 2. It was a day full of inspiration about working in technology and healthcare for all our second-year students, from VMBO to VWO.

Technology is creative, smart, and surprising
GirlsDay is a national initiative that our school has been participating in for years. What once started with a small group of vocational students has now grown into a group of 130 enthusiastic girls of all levels. This year, they had the opportunity to experience technology up close at BIC Eindhoven. The girls took part in various workshops focusing on technology and engineering. They built a marble run together in the Chain Reaction workshop, made their own key rings with a laser engraving machine, and tried their hand at welding and 3D printing. 

Working in healthcare is also cool
This year, we organized Boys' Day for the second time. During Boys' Day, boys explore the healthcare sector. Jelle Reijngoudt opened the day with an inspiring story. Jelle worked as a district nurse for many years and is now a lecturer and researcher at Fontys Mens en Gezondheid (Fontys People and Health): "I want to help young people discover that working in healthcare can also be cool." After the opening, the students attended workshops led by male role models from the healthcare sector. In the afternoon, they visited healthcare institutions in the region, such as MMC, Severinus, Nummereen, and Combinatie Jeugdzorg. This allowed them to see with their own eyes that healthcare is much more than just working at a bedside.

Choosing starts with discovering
At Sondervick College, we believe that students can only make informed choices once they have learned about the different aspects of the labor market. GirlsDay and BoysDay help with this. Together with companies in the region, we give young people the opportunity to discover what suits them best.

Research performance pressure

Achievement pressure is an increasing problem within education. Students' mental health has declined over the past 20 years. Girls generally experience more achievement pressure than boys. The higher the school level, the more performance pressure students feel. And the higher the grade, the higher the pressure experienced. Teacher Amanda Renders investigated the stress factors for achievement pressure within our school in 2024. To do so, she talked to students and parents from the parents' team.

For example, a third of the bridge class students indicated that they experience stress because parents can view their grades in Magister and often see the grade sooner than they do. The study also found that the learning-to-learn training that all bridge class students receive is not sufficient for every student. All results of the study were shared with colleagues during study days. This research is the starting point of a broader approach to reduce achievement pressure within our school.

Christmas Action 2024

Also in 2024 our school was again a collection point for the 'Give a Christmas parcel'action of Voedselbank Veldhoven. Not only students and employees of the school collected items. Local residents also found their way to the collection point and handed in many products.

Parents from the parent team helped with sorting all the stuff and also with packing the packages at the food bank.

Go Clean

Our bridge students got to work on the "Go Clean" project. The assignment? Devise a solution to tackle litter in the CityCentre. Maudy, Jur, Julia and Naomi came up with the winning solution. The tiles they came up with actually went into production!!!

In June, the first tile was laid by Alderman Van Broekhoven under the watchful eye of the designers.

Design Challenge

Our school took part in Summa College's Design Challenge.

During handicraft classes, third-year vmbo students created a work of art from waste. Our students Eva and Louise won the challenge with their creation 'Obesibird'. During the award ceremony the Eindhovens Dagblad was also present.

Engineering Days 2024

October was Engineering Days for our first-year students. They visited different companies in the region to learn about the world of engineering.

And it was fun! Some students got to sit in a boat and still others got a chance to see a car wash from above. At some companies they were even allowed to walk under a truck!

How nice that so many companies are willing to cooperate with these company visits!

Students devise children's Prehistoric Village party

During the Havo In Praktijk lessons, our students got to work on an assignment from the preHistoric Village in Eindhoven: develop a children's party aimed at children ages 6 to 11.

The project began with a visit to the preHistoric Village, where students gained inspiration by exploring the historic environment and activities. Then they worked in groups on their ideas. They worked out an activity, created a manual for facilitators, developed materials using a laser cutter and finally, each group presented their children's party to a jury. This jury included teachers and Yvonne Lamers, museum manager of the preHistoric Village. Teacher Jasper Prins: "Nice to see that the museum manager pays attention to other things than the teachers. And super nice that they worked on a real assignment, which is very motivating for our students!"

Caddy, Kasia, Joep and Mila came up with the winning children's party. In their idea, the preHistoric Village was destroyed and the children have to search for puzzle pieces during the children's party. Each piece forms a part of a house, which the children have to put together during the party. Together, the houses form a new prehistoric village.

OMO profile essay award

Every student makes a profile paper for their final exam. Students choose the topic themselves. They work together in pairs. This year, many fine profile papers were submitted on a wide variety of subjects. A number of these papers were nominated for the OMO profile paper award, including the paper by Niels and Joris.

For their profile paper, Joris Verrijt and Niels de Haan from 5havo did research at the company Knapen Trailers B.V. into the ergonomic conditions of people on the shop floor. Knapen Trailers is a company that builds trailers for trucks. Niels and Joris recommended possible improvements to the company. Joris: "A study into the ergonomic working environment fits well with our chosen further study. I myself want to study mechanical engineering. Niels is going to do business administration. Niels: 'For us this was a great opportunity to support Knapen Trailers towards a better and safer working environment and to learn more about ergonomics.'
 
Wednesday, June 12, Niels and Joris learned that they had been nominated. Thursday, June 27, they received the third prize. Congratulations to Joris and Niels on this well-deserved award. We are proud of you!

Girls'Day and Boys'Day

Engineering is for men and healthcare for women....... A misconception that is unfortunately still common. At our school we have participated in Girls' Day for several years now. A day when companies open their doors to introduce our girls to technology. This year they visited Brainport Industries Campus.

Loes Bijnnen, Zorg & Welzijn teacher, thought this was a great opportunity to introduce boys to healthcare that same day. The boys followed several workshops in the morning, given by male caregivers. Then they visited different care locations in the region.

It was a great success that did not go unnoticed by the media, various trade organizations and even Minister Dijkgraaf.

Thanks to Zorg in Oktober, Severinus, Actief Zorg, Neos, Combinatie Jeugdzorg, Máxima MC and Transvorm.
