During the engineering days, the first-year students discovered just how versatile engineering is. Working in small groups, the students visited various companies. There, they got a behind-the-scenes look and discovered just how much engineering goes into the products and activities we encounter every day.
From installations to interior design
For example, students visited an installation company. At a construction site where apartments were being built, they learned about the heating and cooling systems. At an interior design firm, the students got to try their hand at the work themselves. Under the director’s supervision, they were allowed to use a router. The result? A handmade phone stand that they, of course, got to take home.
At the Controls Themselves
The students also got to know various machines. Some students were even allowed to operate a mini-excavator themselves. That generated a lot of excitement! During another visit, they learned how to work with metal. They even built their own little airplane. The students also got to work with old radios, irons, and other household appliances. With the help of instructors, they tried to get these devices working again.
Technology is everywhere
The technology days were all about observing, asking questions, and—above all—getting hands-on. The students were introduced to various professions and discovered just how many opportunities the technology sector offers. They also got to explore places, tasks, and techniques they wouldn’t normally come into contact with. One student put it perfectly: “It’s really cool that you got to see all these things you don’t usually see.”
VDL, Repair Café, Bas Trucks, Blauweplaat Motors, Boss Machinery, E3 Interieurbouw, Installatiebedrijf Will van der Velden, Magnetic Innovations, NVDS Scooters, ASN Autoschade van der Linden, Van der Sanden Watersport, Van Hout Adviseurs en Installateurs, and Wilting Components—thank you very much for your contribution to these engineering days!
