Tuesday, April 14 was all about exploration for second-year students. During Girls’ Day and Boys’ Day, students were introduced to fields they might not have chosen on their own. Girls’ Day focuses on technology, while Boys’ Day offered a glimpse into healthcare and social services. The goal is simple: to show that these fields are open to everyone.
Girls’ Day kicked off with an inspiring talk by Mindy Howard, a former NASA astronaut trainer and speaker on mental resilience. Her message was clear: you can become anything you want. Even an astronaut. Afterward, the girls got to work on a mission to Mars and took part in workshops such as keychain welding and drone flying.
There was also plenty to discover on Boys’ Day. The day began with a presentation by Jelle Reijngoudt, a lecturer and researcher at Fontys and a healthcare professional with a passion for his field. He demonstrated just how diverse careers in healthcare and social services can be for men. Afterward, they visited local companies where they got to get hands-on experience. From drawing blood and performing CPR in VR to a peek inside a simulation OR and a wheelchair race in the sunshine.
A successful day. Full of new insights. And perhaps the first step toward a future that the students hadn't yet envisioned.
