"You learn a lot more than just language in Greek and Latin."
Annie Nakka, Hana Khurshid and Fenna Peeters are in the second year of havo/vwo. They are doing the gymnasium track. That means they are learning Greek and Latin. "Through these subjects you understand better how the world is put together," says Nakka.
In the bridge class havo/vwo, students receive the subject of classical
cultural education. In the second year havo/vwo they can choose the gymnasium track
, with Greek and Latin. After the second year, they choose havo, atheneum
or gymnasium. Will it be gymnasium? Then they receive the subjects Greek Language & Culture and Latin Language & Culture.
Easier language learning
Fenna, Hana and Annie (13) are real language people. They do bilingual education at Sondervick College and follow the gymnasium track. Annie: "I found classical cultural education very interesting in the bridge class. I wanted to learn more about antiquity and that's why I chose the gymnasium track. I now get Greek and Latin instead of engineering and handicrafts." Hana: "Some people say: what good is Greek and Latin? Nobody speaks that! But Latin is still used a lot, for example in medicine. Greek and Latin also make it easier to learn other languages, such as French and German."
Understanding the world
Moreover, in Greek and Latin you not only learn the language, but also about culture and history. Fenna: "So you get a better understanding of the world and why things are the way they are. Many customs from ancient times we still have today. The Olympic Games, for example. During Greek and Latin you learn how people used to think. You can compare that to how we think now. All things that are useful throughout your life." Annie: "Learning about Greek gods and myths is also a lot of fun. The teachers, Mr. Smits and Mrs. Van Leuken, are good at talking about that. I definitely want to continue with grammar school next year."
