Gymnasium
At the gymnasium, in addition to the regular VWO courses, you’ll also study Greek and Latin. But the gymnasium is more than just learning two classical languages. Students delve into the world of classical antiquity and discover how it continues to influence our language, art, literature, science, and society.
In the first year, all HAVO and VWO students are introduced to classical antiquity in the "Classical Cultural Education" course. They explore the stories, culture, and history of the Greeks and Romans. At the end of the first year, students can choose the gymnasium track. Starting in the second year, they take Greek and Latin.
The Gymnasium is a good fit for students who are curious, eager to explore, and enjoy looking beyond what meets the eye. By studying ancient languages and sources, students learn to make connections and think critically—skills that will serve them well in other subjects and later in their academic studies.

Giulia is in the 4th grade of high school. She was first introduced to the classical world back in her first year of middle school. She started in the bilingual HAVO/VWO program and took the course “Classical Cultural Studies,” where she learned about the culture and history of the Greeks and Romans. She enjoyed it so much that, at the end of her first year, she deliberately chose to transfer to the gymnasium.
