Basic skills

Josine

In 2025, we used the Basic Skills subsidy to give a strong boost to reading, arithmetic, digital literacy, and citizenship.

Reading
We opened a new school library. We also launched a reading campaign, working closely with the library. During impulse weeks, every lesson starts with ten minutes of free reading. Students can bring a book from home or choose one from the school library.

For math, we developed a school-wide math card. This started as a pilot in grade 3. Now the card is available for all students. This way, they work step by step toward the 2F level.
We implemented math lessons in the upper grades for students who do not have math in their course load but do take a math exam.

Digital literacy
We developed a game for our students to promote digital literacy.

Citizenship
We identified which programs within our school touch on the theme of citizenship. We measured citizenship skills among our students.

With this approach, we strengthen the foundation for every student.

Give a Christmas package

Josine

In 2025, our school was once again a collection point for the 'Give a Christmas Hamper' campaign organized by the Veldhoven Food Bank. It wasn't just students and staff who collected items; local residents also found their way to the collection point and donated lots of products.

Sondervick College students take action for education in India

On Friday, October 10, a charity run for first-year students took place on the campus of Sondervick College. With this sporting event, the students raised money for the Pastoor Vekemans Fund, a foundation in Veldhoven that supports disadvantaged children in India. Thanks to their help, these children can receive an education, something that is unfortunately not a given there.

In the weeks leading up to the charity run, volunteers from the Pastoor Vekemans Fund visited the first-year students during class. They talked about their work and showed how education can make a huge difference in a child's life. This gave the students a clear picture of the cause they were supporting.

The students collected sponsors on their sponsor cards beforehand. During the charity run, they received a stamp for every lap they ran. The first-year students enthusiastically ran their laps to raise as much money as possible.

At the end of October, there was a festive moment when the students presented a check for€5,312 from
to representatives of the Pastoor Vekemans Fund.

Career fair

Josine

On Thursday, January 29, we organized a career fair in collaboration with "Naar de juiste plek" (To the right place). More than 300 students (VMBO basic/advanced, MAVO, and HAVO) from our school discovered what different professions have to offer. More than 85 professions were represented at the fair. These professions came from various sectors such as healthcare, economics, technology, and hospitality. Students were well prepared with the lesson plan they received via www.kiesjeplek.nl.

Thanks to the companies and students for their dedication and enthusiasm!

Kiesjeplek.nl is an initiative of MKB Eindhoven and Naar de juiste plek.

The latter is a collaboration between schools, businesses, and municipalities in Southeast Brabant. Together, they are committed to providing effective career guidance so that all students end up in the right learning or working environment. This helps prevent early school leaving and youth unemployment. Want to know more? Visit www.naardejuisteplek.nl.

Together, we are working on the future of our region and creating opportunities for young people to discover what they are good at!

Insect hotel unveiled

Josine

From 10 to 16 November it was National Climate Week. Municipality Veldhoven also participated and asked students of our school to design an insect hotel.

During our first-year students' engineering week, several groups worked on the design of this insect hotel. Second graders also received a lesson on bee mortality, the urgency of bees and suitable shelters after which they got to designing their own.

Janne, Jasper and Dieke's design came out on top. After all, their design was not only a hotel for bees, but also a hedgehog shelter for during their winter hibernation. Teachers Mr. Berkers and Mr. van den Broek then actually built the design.

Thursday afternoon, Nov. 13, the students were allowed to officially unveil the insect hotel together with Alderman Giesbertz. The insect hotel called "Bee & Bee 't Look" can be found on the Twijnder in 't Look.

Project 'Something Tasty' at Garden Center Coppelmans

Josine

Since this school year, all third-year mavo students with the theoretical curriculum have the subject Mavo In Practice. We find it important that our students learn not only from books, but also by doing. In this subject they work on assignments from real companies or organizations and discover their talents in practice.

For the past few weeks, the project "Something Delicious" has been the focus of attention. After several lessons in which they explored their target audience, designed presentation materials and prepared recipes, Thursday, Nov. 6, it was time for the hands-on day. In the morning, students worked in groups to bake and decorate Christmas-themed cookies. In the process they learned to plan, cooperate and work hygienically. After baking, the groups were assigned a spot in the restaurant of garden center Coppelmans. There they were allowed to decorate their own 'stall'. They creatively used decorative materials from the store to present their products attractively.

Most groups divided the tasks well and helped each other when necessary. While presenting, they showed enthusiasm and hospitality. They talked to customers, explained what they had made and invited people to taste. Sometimes that was quite a challenge. For example, one group was given a spot where no cash register was open and thus few visitors came by. But that didn't stop them: they decided to go into the store themselves to offer their cookies to shoppers. That shows entrepreneurship and guts. Exactly what Mavo In Practice is all about.

Teacher Marc Mantz looks back with satisfaction, "It was a successful day full of commitment, cooperation and growth from our students. The students not only learned something about baking and presentation, but also about customer-oriented work and taking responsibility."

Exploring Trier together

Josine

On October 22 and 23, the students of 4 and 5 Gymnasium of the Sondervick College and Were Di from Valkenswaard went on an excursion to Trier. After getting to know each other mainly online during the 'hybrid' lessons, the students now went on a joint exploration of Germany's oldest city.
Among the places they visited were the Porta Nigra, the amphitheater, the Kaiserthermen, the Dom, the Matthiasabtei and, just outside the center, the mosaic of Nennig and the column of Igel. The trip was accompanied by the Greek and Latin teachers from both schools. We look back on a successful first joint excursion!

Students design game for Cordaad Welfare

Josine

How do you ensure that internationals and their buddies get to know each other and Veldhoven better through play? With that assignment from Cordaad Welzijn, students during the Havo in Practice lessons went to work within the design project "Design a Game for Internationals".

The assignment: Design an outdoor game for 20 to 25 players, entirely in English. Use at least one component from the 3D printer or laser cutter.
In groups, students went through all the stages of a real design process. From goal analysis and brainstorming to prototyping, testing and presenting. Presenting was on the program last Monday. Then, during a presentation market, the students presented their games to Marinka Lavrijssen of Cordaad Welzijn.

A strikingly well-developed game was "Coin Hunt," devised by Victoria, Sophie, Lize and Rowen. In this game, players search for coins in Veldhoven and along the way perform tasks that stimulate cooperation and encounters. Cordaad Welzijn chose this game to actually deploy in the coming period.

School library open!

Josine

In 2025, we opened a school library at our school. And the best part? The first collection was put together by our students themselves. At the beginning of this school year, each student chose a book during the book market at school. Second-year students were even allowed to choose a book at the Van Piere bookstore in Eindhoven. And now all those books are in the brand-new library.

Reading pleasure
"I chose the book Wereldspionnen (World Spies). I've already read that book myself and really enjoyed it. Now others can read it too," says Max from thv2c. Loue from thv2d is very happy with the new school library: "I'm really glad the school is getting a library because I love reading. It transports you to another world." Vova from bk2b is also enthusiastic. He can't wait to read the book he chose, "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Ugly Truth."

Official Opening
On Tuesday, September 9, we officially opened the school library. The first students were presented with their chosen book. And even the press was present. Education Manager Ineke Jacobs: "Reading is a key to success in all subjects. It increases vocabulary, strengthens reading comprehension and opens up new worlds. By letting students choose for themselves, we make reading personal, fun and meaningful. In this way we build together a library full of books that students really want to read."

Volunteers wanted
The school library runs on volunteers. Want to join? Volunteer recruitment and scheduling is handled by Cordaad Welzijn.

Sondervick on Stage 2025

Josine

What an evening! The third edition of Sondervick On Stage was a huge success. Students and teachers alike took to the stage with confidence and showed what they are capable of.

The audience clearly enjoyed all the performances and rewarded the artists with thunderous applause.

A big shout-out to everyone who was on stage — and to the team behind the scenes who made it all possible.

We are already looking forward to the next edition!
