Support and guidance
At Sondervick College, your development is central. We offer an education that suits you, in a safe and stimulating environment. For most students, the guidance of mentors, subject teachers and deans is sufficient. We support you in the areas of learning, career orientation and your social-emotional development. Do you need extra support? We also arrange that together!
Extra support
When more is needed, we work with you, your parents and the support coordinator to see what will help best. This is always done in consultation and at the initiative of your mentor or parents.
Mentoring classes
During mentoring classes, we work on skills that will help you move forward:
Didactic: How do you learn in a way that suits you?
Social-emotional and group skills: Working together, developing yourself and finding your place in the group.
Career Orientation: What are your ambitions and what steps can you take?
In the first and second grade, you will receive extra help with planning and "learning to learn. In addition, in the first year you will attend a resilience training together with your class.
Plus class
The Plus class offers homework help for planning and structuring homework. You will learn to independently plan your home and learning work and establish a proper structure. In addition, each time there is a theme in the area of 'learning to learn'. The lesson hour starts with the theme. After 15 minutes, students have their planning checked and begin doing their homework.
Rock & Water
When classroom resilience training is not sufficient, a student may take a specific Rock & Water training, such as:
Fear of failure training
The "Fear of Failure Reduction Training" teaches you to deal with tension in a different way. It does not take away your fear, but you learn to deal with the tension you feel. The training takes place in small groups.
Exam stress reduction training
Exam anxiety is a type of fear of failure that comes on during exams or tests. The fear of not passing the exam blocks your normal thinking and you get a lower grade. During this training we teach you how to deal with these thoughts to prevent blocking.
Homework help
Sondervick College cooperates with Spectrum Brabant, a professional homework institute with several locations in Brabant. Spectrum Brabant offers 3 daily forms of tutoring in fixed classrooms within school. Spectrum Brabant is a social enterprise and works with rates according to ability to pay.
If you think your son or daughter will benefit, you can sign up with Spectrum Brabant for a fixed number of afternoons per week.
In an intake interview with parents, the first step is to formulate the request for help. During the observation period that follows, a personal plan of action is formulated by the counselor based on the request for help, the observations and the student's input.
The primary goal of tutoring is for your son or daughter to learn skills to tackle homework independently. The first focus is often on planning skills.
Spectrum Brabant has an eye for each individual student, with each his/her strengths, but also his/her own development points. This is why they offer customized guidance, in which small, safe steps are taken to reach larger goals.
More information, terms and conditions and possibility to apply can be found on the Spectrum Brabant website.

Dyslexia tutoring
The Sondervick College employs two specialized dyslexia coaches who serve as a resource for students, parents and teachers. During the lessons, students with dyslexia are guided by the subject teachers. They ensure that the student can master the material as effectively as possible. Bridge students with dyslexia receive dyslexia training in which they are given tips on, among other things, learning words and reading smart texts.
Dyslexia Statement
Bridge students and lateral entrants with dyslexia receive a temporary dyslexia pass. This pass will be converted to a permanent, personalized pass during the first term of the school year. The dyslexia pass is compiled by the dyslexia coach and the student. It states what the student is entitled to, such as time extension. The pass also states the student's responsibilities. You can read more about dyslexia specific rights in the Dyslexia Protocol.
Resources
Students with dyslexia may use digital books from Dedicon. They also receive a free home license of the speech program ClaroRead. The speech program must be reinstalled on the student's laptop each school year. Beforehand, watch the step-by-step plan and a video about downloading the ClaroRead software. The download itself is done in a separate download environment.
Extra support
Sometimes it is necessary to bring in more support. For example, students with a diagnosis or characteristics of a particular developmental disorder. Structural support helps them function well in school.
Pupil Coaches
Our student coaches are specialists in the student's support needs. They support students for a minimum of 20 class weeks and this can be extended when necessary. Some students use this extra support throughout their high school career. The student coaches work closely with mentors, subject teachers, parents and any external partners.
Assistance from outside school
For some students it is necessary to bring in social workers from outside the school. During a Multidisciplinary Consultation (MDO) parents and students and a number of external partners discuss the request for help. In this way, students who do not yet have assistance can be quickly identified and assistance can be coordinated. At least the support coordinator and/or psychologist/educator participate in this consultation.
Custom track
When students are temporarily unable to attend all regular classes due to behavioral, motivational or psychosocial problems, they may receive a modified pathway temporarily (up to 12 weeks). Often you then start and end the day with a counselor and follow only part of your lessons with the class. The remaining time you work independently or receive guidance to solve problems.
Access to youth assistance
On the site of Veldhoven municipality you can read where to go with your questions.
Youth Point
As a parent, do you have questions about parenting? Or do you, as a young person, have questions about growing up? Then you can contact the youth center. The collaborating parties would like to introduce themselves via a video.
